The Helena Sporting and Cultural Association
The Helena Sporting and Cultural Association (HS&CA) is an independent group dedicated to the promotion of sports and cultural pursuits for students within the College and within the local community. The two groups currently operating under the Association are Helena Hornets (netball) and Helena Basketball. Interest from other sporting or cultural community groups is welcomed.

Basketball
The Helena Basketball Club has teams ranging from Year 3 to Year 12 for boys and girls. Our teams are registered with the Hills Raiders Basketball Association and compete against other local clubs on Tuesday and Friday evenings. Games are played all year round in the summer and winter fixtures at the Mundaring Arena Sporting Complex on Mundaring Weir Road.
No experience is necessary for basketball as all training is provided. Teams train at the Darlington Campus or the Glen Forrest Campus once a week, depending on their age category. Some of the older teams choose not to train and to concentrate on their schooling but still play basketball just for the fun of it.
Helena Basketball singlets are supplied but are returned at the end of the season. Players are required to purchase their own plain black basketball shorts (no pockets or logos). Suitable sports footwear is to be worn and expensive basketball shoes are not a requirement. Any socks may be worn.
Under 14 (and older) players are given the opportunity to attend umpiring clinics and players are paid for any umpiring undertaken during the season. Helena Basketball encourages senior students to coach junior teams and they are required to participate in coaching clinics throughout the season. All teams are required to have an adult team manager.
Helena Basketball is a member of the Helena College Sporting and Cultural Association. Although associated with the College, Helena Basketball is run entirely by volunteers (ie players’ parents and senior students), including coaches and managers.

Netball
Helena Hornets Netball Club encourages fun, fitness and friendship for girls and boys aged 6 to 18, although there are some restrictions on boys’ competitions.
Helena Hornets teams participate in the Swan Districts Netball Association’s Saturday winter competition during Terms 2 and 3 and the Tuesday evening spring competition in Term 4. There is no netball during Term 1. All games are played at the Swan District courts in Gray Drive, Midvale.
Young players are able to learn the game by participating in Net-Set-Go Skills for Year 2 and Net-Set-Go Competition for Years 3-4, before moving to the Juniors’ competition for Years 5-12.
From Year 3 each team playing in the winter competition usually trains once a week at either the Darlington Campus or Glen Forrest Campus (depending on the age category) and play a game on Saturday. The spring competition is more casual and often teams choose not to train.
Junior teams wear the College sports uniform, while Years 7-9 wear the Helena Hornets skirt and top and Year 10-12 wear a dress. A Helena Hornets club jacket is optional. The Association has a strict dress code, which requires all Helena Hornets teams to wear the College sports ‘hoop’ socks.
As players progress through the club they are encouraged to develop their skills as umpires through the Green Shirt programme. Older players interested in coaching are also supported and mentored by club members.
Helena Hornets is a member of the Helena College Sporting and Cultural Association. Although associated with the College, Helena Hornets is run entirely by volunteers (ie players’ parents), including coaches and managers.
The club hosts an annual Sausage Sizzle fundraiser at the Midvale courts during the winter competition, as well as an end-of-season function.
