Robocup Success for Helena College
Helena College is very proud to have two team qualify for the National Finals of the Robocup Junior Competition (Lightweight Soccer category). The teams qualified for the Nationals by virtue of taking out Gold and Silver in the Robocup Junior State competition.
For the Lightweight Soccer competition, students were required to design, build, and program two robots to compete in a dynamic game of robot soccer against an opposing pair of robots. Soccer robots were required to be fully autonomous, so needed to employ a variety of sensors to find the ball, point in the right direction, and stay inside the playing area. Creative gameplay strategies were needed to outsmart the opposition.
Team Irrelevants, comprising of Sabian, Jordyn, Nicole and Olivia, were our representatives at the Nationals which were held in Melbourne early in October. The team had just one day’s preparation in the Melbourne Sports Centre, followed by two days of intense competition.
Although they came up against some strong competition against more experienced teams, they managed to achieve some magnificent results and finished up taking out the Bronze medal. This was an amazing achievement for the team and just reward for all their hard work. The team learnt so much about competing at this level, and have returned many ideas for improvement for 2024.
