Principal's Note: Strategic Plan
The College’s Strategic Plan serves as a roadmap for our ongoing growth and improvement, and this edition of the Principal's Note reviews the progress the College made against the 2021-2024 commitments and introduces the goals for the years ahead, in the 2025-2027 Strategic Plan.
In Review | The 2021-2024 Strategic Plan
The College’s Strategic Plan serves as a roadmap for our ongoing growth and improvement. The 2021-2024 Strategic Plan focused on strengthening our identity as a single school located over two campuses, fostering a cohesive K-12 experience for students, parents, and staff. Key initiatives included:
- Establishing K-12 staff committees for input on school-wide processes and decisions
- Providing combined professional development opportunities for Junior and Senior School staff
- Ensuring K-12 curriculum alignment with the School Curriculum and Standards Authority
- Hosting parent information events for families with students in both Junior and Senior School
- Organising whole-school student assemblies throughout the year
- Introducing opportunities for Junior School students to access Senior School resources throughout the year
- Terminating the separate Junior School and Senior School Parent and Friends associations and forming a single Friends of Helena parent group
Additionally, a range of other key actions stemmed from the previous Strategic Plan, including:
- Introducing Auslan in the Junior School
- Expanding student support services by appointing a second school psychologist, a school nurse, and increasing learning support resources across the College
- Transitioning away from the International Baccalaureate program, allowing for a more explicit teaching approach that has led to improved ATAR and NAPLAN results
- Restructuring school leadership by introducing Heads of Year in the Middle School
- Introduction of a new College website and improved communication channels
- Developing a Master Plan to maintain and enhance facilities across both campuses
Looking Ahead | The 2025-2027 Strategic Plan
During 2024, the College Council, in collaboration with the Executive team, began developing the 2025-2027 Strategic Plan. This process involved analysing parent, student, and staff feedback surveys from the past three years, as well as engaging an external consultant to conduct discussions with members of our school community. I extend my sincere thanks to everyone who contributed their insights on the College’s strengths and areas for growth.
A key theme that emerged was "Looking Ahead", ensuring the College remains adaptable to changes in education, evolving career landscapes, and technological advancements, while also maintaining financial and operational sustainability.
The new plan is structured around five key focus areas:
- Looking Ahead: To be flexible in the delivery of our learning programs by looking ahead and adapting to change.\
- Educational Excellence: To provide an engaging learning program in which all students are empowered to achieve personal success through the acquisition of new knowledge and skills.
- Student Experience: To provide a safe and inclusive environment where students flourish as individuals and positively contribute to their education and community.
- People and Culture: To develop a positive workplace culture which supports wellbeing and the development of all staff.
- College Sustainability: To secure our future through sound strategic oversight of the College’s finances, facilities and learning programs.

This plan provides a clear blueprint for the Executive team and College staff as we continue to grow and improve the Helena College experience for our students and all in our community. I extend my gratitude to the College Council, especially our Chair, Ty Theodore, for his leadership in shaping our vision for the next three years.
I look forward to keeping parents informed about our progress as we work towards these strategic goals.
