From the Principal | Peter Coombs
One of the unique aspects of working in a school is the cyclical nature of the school year, with its distinct beginning and end. This annual cycle provides us with a natural opportunity to reflect on the achievements of the past year and to look forward with anticipation to what lies ahead.
As the year began, we welcomed many new students and families to our College. Both campuses were alive with energy as students built new friendships, found their tribes, and settled into the rhythm of school life. Today, as I reflect on the year, I am filled with pride at how far our students have grown academically, emotionally, and socially. I am certain that parents and guardians have also witnessed remarkable growth in their children over the year.
At Helena College, we proudly uphold our commitment to offering a well-rounded education. Through a diverse range of programs and opportunities, we aim to nurture young people holistically. These opportunities are made possible by the tireless efforts of many adults who support our learning community beyond the classroom. To every teacher, staff member, and parent volunteer, thank you for your invaluable contributions. Whether organising sporting events, artistic performances, leadership initiatives, art exhibitions, excursions, or countless other activities, you have enriched the experiences of our students in countless ways.
Each year brings a mix of joyful beginnings and bittersweet farewells. As we say goodbye to students and families moving on from our community this year, we wish you every success and happiness in your next chapter. We also farewell a number of staff members this year. On behalf of the entire College, I would like to thank Steve Smith, Béatrice Archambaud, Ruth Gallagher, Sarah Ferreria, Victoria MacNulty, Alana Urlus, Koren Bryan, and Vicki Blythman for their dedication and the unique contributions they’ve made to our community.
A special mention goes to Dave Bannister, who retires this year after an extraordinary career devoted to supporting and educating young people. With over 20 years of service to Helena College, Dave leaves behind a legacy of care, wisdom, and inspiration. We wish him a fulfilling and joyful retirement.
I would also like to acknowledge and thank Ty Theodore, Chair of the Helena College Council, and all Council members for their steadfast guidance and support throughout this school year. Your leadership has been integral to our continued success and growth as a College.
As the holiday season approaches, I extend my warmest wishes to all our students, families, and staff. May this time bring you joy, relaxation, and cherished moments with loved ones. I look forward to welcoming our students back to the Darlington and Glen Forrest Campuses on Wednesday, 5 February 2025, for another year of learning, growth, and discovery.
